The Fox – Symbol of Pohorje and the Golden Fox
For decades, Maribor and Pohorje have been marked by one of Slovenia’s most renowned sporting events – the Golden Fox. The first race was organized in 1964 on the steep upper course of the old FIS track below Hotel Bellevue. In 1978, on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Golden Fox, the Snow Stadium in the valley was built, bringing the competition closer to visitors and the city.
Located at the finish area of the Snow Stadium, Hotel Arena has long been the home of the Golden Fox and remains a symbol of tradition, sport, and hospitality beneath Pohorje.
The Fox – A Resident of the Pohorje Forest
The fox is not only a symbol of the competition, but also a true resident of the Pohorje forests. It is an adaptable and cautious animal, mostly active at night. In autumn and winter, it can also be seen during the day.
It finds its home in a den – a fox burrow, which it digs itself or takes over from an abandoned badger sett.
The fox can be recognized by its characteristic features:
– the back of its ears is always black
– the tip of its bushy tail is white
– its movement is quiet and elegant
The fox has an exceptionally well-developed sense of smell and hearing.
It can detect the squeak of a mouse from a distance of up to 100 meters.
At night, its eyes shine with a red glow, allowing excellent orientation in the dark.
